American Wirehair Cat Breed

American Wirehair Cats

The American Wirehair has a very dense, springy to the touch, and supple coat of hair. This cat is very agile, active and interested in it's environment.  These cats are very intelligent and because they are so affectionate make a great companion.  The Wirehair is very friendly and gentle making it an ideal pet to be around children and dogs as well as other pets.

Mating of two American Wirehairs rarely produce successful litters, therefore they are bred from a Wirehair and an American Shorthair. They are very similar to the American Shorthair with a medium to large build and the same muscle structure. The muzzle and cheekbones are prominent, with a well rounded head.

This cat is mostly unknown in countries other than the United States.  The first known American Wirehair was one of six kittens born in New York in 1966.
The breed was first accepted into competition in the U.S. by the Cat Fanciers' Association in 1978.

The American Wirehair is acceptable in all coat varieties with the exception of  the colorpoint, solid chocolate and solid lavender.  It is a must that the cat have the wiry appearance of the coat for show purposes.
