Subject: Painted turtle
What's the best set up for my painted turtle, Shelly. I have a 20 gallon long with a Penguin power sponge filter. I use Aquaclear in the water. Do I need to worry about ammonia and how often should I change the water. The filter keeps it looking clear for a long time but I'm afraid there might be impurities that I can't see.
Mr. Panger, Yes there are always going to be "impurities" you can't see. I am not a turtle expert per se, but you will need to perform water changes of at least 50% every two weeks. Shelly will prefer if you perform these changes weekly, hint hint... Adequate filtration is a must as well. If your present filter is only a sponge filter, you may want to consider upgrading. Shelly will be living in a closed system, so these water changes and adequate filtration are very important to her well-being. If you really want to read up, try a search engine and type in aquatic turtles. You will be a amazed at how much info there is out there. Lastly, be sure Shelly has places to climb up on and that you don't fill the 20g too full. I wish you and Shelly the best... Aquariaman |
