In the southern Sahara, the Tuareg tribes bred the Sloughi to work as a hunter and guard dog. The dogs are quick enough to catch gazelles, hares and the European mouflon. They are brave and strong and very beautiful.  The Azawakh doesn't kill his prey, he hunts purely by sight.  He holds the prey until his master catches up with him. He is extremely fast, reaching speeds over 40 mph.

Height - 23 to 29 inches (58 to 74 cm).
Weight - 37 to 55 pounds (17 to 25 kg).
