Chinese Shar-Pei Dog Breed

Shar-Pei Information

The Chinese Shar-Pei originates from a cross between the Mastiff and various Nordic breeds. It was known originally as the Chinese Fighting Dog. The blue tongue, also a feature of the Chow Chow makes it clear that it was a contributor to the Shar-Pei's lineage. In the south of China in Dah Let and Kwantung provinces, the Shar-pei were working dogs, used for hunting and herding . At night they became entertainers in the dog fighting pits. The many folds of loose skin gave the dog an advantage.

The opposing dog usually found it distasteful and uncomfortable when grabbed. Fortunately, the dog showed little interest in the pits and became more of a working dog. It almost became extinct due to the ban on dogs on the mainland.

This dog is alert, affectionate, and independent. His frowning expression is no indicator of his disposition. He loves being with humans to whom he is extremely devoted. However, Shar-Peis tend to be one-person dogs.
