Vizsla
Dog Breed
The origin of the Vizsla, or Hungarian Pointer, has been lost over the centuries, but it is known that it's ancestors were the hunters and companions of the Magyar hordes which swarmed over Central Europe more than 1000 years ago and settled in what is now Hungary. Old stone etchings of the tenth century show a Magyar huntsman with his falcon and a dog resembling the Vizsla. This is a medium sized dog who is robust and if cooped up in a home, can become hyperactive and destructive. He is an affectionate companion at home, and in the field a powerful dog. He is fearless, gentle, and a good guard. Height- males, 22 inches; females, 21-23. Weight - 50 to 70 pounds. Coat types - tan, short-haired and smooth. Sheds a little. Grooming once a week. Costs - averages $30.00 a month. Vizsla Club of America, Inc. (M) Corres.
