Native to South America: Orinoco, Amazon and La Plata River basins. Length, 8 to 15 inches Quite popular with aquarists but not for aquaculturists because of its slow growth. When alarmed they have a peculiar habit of assuming a close head-to-tail position and doing a sort of slow roll. Given a large tank (50 to 100 gallons), they spawn readily. They are excellent parents. Feeds on small fish, crayfish, worms and insect larvae. Water, pH range: 6.0 - 8.0; dH range: 5.0 - 19.0, temperature 22 - 25°C
