Native to South America: Peruvian Amazon (Ref. 6329), middle Amazon, Guyanas and Venezuela. Gregarious, can sometimes be aggressive or calm. The hatchet fish are surface dwellers that require a varied diet of worms, crustaceans and insects. It is capable of capturing small aerial insects. The Gasteropelecidae is the larger of the two genera that makeup the hatchet fishes. The females are bigger than the males. Has not been bred in captivity.
