Fish Tank Heaters

Preventing electrical accidents:

The devices used to create the right environment for your fish, lights, heaters, filters, are all electrical. There are some rules that should be followed to prevent accidents. They are:

• Make sure that all electrical appliances are suitable for use with water. They should be marked so.
• Unplug all the wires before working inside of the tank.
• Circuit breakers may be purchased at your Fish & Aquarium Shop. They should between the appliance and the electrical outlet.
• Make sure that the appliance you buy is (UL) approved.

Heaters

With tropical fresh-water fish a heater is mandatory. An automatic thermostat built into the heater that responds to the fluctuation in water temperature is recommended. The 3 types of heaters are:

• Thermo heaters: This type is a heater and filter built into one unit. Water that flows through this one is cleaned and warmed at the same time.
• Rod-type: This type is attached to the back wall of the tank and a rod runs the length of the wall.
• Bottom heaters: This type has heat cables that are placed on the bottom of the tank before the material you are using is placed in the tank. This type helps circulate the water through the bottom material and aids in the growth of plants.

In a room of normal temperature, one half watt per quart of water will be sufficient. Cooler rooms should use a heater that emits one watt for every quart of water. A thermometer is recommended so you can check the water temperature on a regular basis.
