Native to South America: Amazon basin in the vicinity of Leticia, Colombia ; also in the Peruvian Amazon and Brazil. One of the South American Tetras, which is the largest group of Characins, this "bleeding heart" tetra likes its water slightly acidic. It is also one of the more popular tetra among aquarist.

Feeds on worms, crustaceans and plants.

Water, pH range: 5.6 - 7.2; dH range: 12.0
