Known as the "Electric Catfish", this fish uses its shock to capture food fish. The electric organ, capable of discharging 300-400 V, is derived from pectoral muscle and surrounds almost the entire body. It is used both for prey capture and defense. At night smaller fishes kept with it are apt to jump out of the tank or otherwise disappear. They are tough and easily fed. Not known to have been bred in captivity.
