Native to West Africa: Nigeria, Cameroon and Gabon (Ogowe). Reported from the Ouémé River, Benin. Occurs in rainforest areas. Mouth very, very large and well adapted at eating smaller fishes. It may take worms, mosquito larvae and the larger water insects, but to be placed in a breeding condition it should have fish. Though it isn't a Bubble-nest Builder the spawning does resemble one. The male makes bubbles among the tops of leaves such as the Cabomba, and the female deposits about 1oo eggs singly on the plant among the bubbles. Female should then be removed.
