Aquarium Sizes & Lighting

The larger the fish tank the easier it is to maintain.

Waste from the fish pollute the water and the water in a bigger tank will remain stable much longer. Therefore, it is recommended that the beginner starts with a 40 gallon tank.

All fish aquariums should have a cover. This helps to prevent evaporation of water and helps to keep those leaping fish in the tank.

It is advisable to use only those tanks that have been tested for safety and have been caulked with a silicon that will last for many years. Usually the tank will have a safety symbol affixed to the glass. If not, question your Fish & Aquarium Shop owner.

Upon getting the tank home and before filling it with water, you must, by all means, place it on a level surface. If the tank is not setting level and you add water, the pressure from the weight of the water will put pressure on the joints and glass. Eventually this will cause the glass or joints to give way and then you will have one heck of a mess, to say nothing about having to replace the fish, etc.

Another concern is the weight of the tank once set up. A 40 gallon tank can weigh as much as 500 pounds. So find a stand that will support at least this much weight.

You can find appropriate stands at your Fish & Aquarium Shops.
