Testing the tank water once a week for normal pH and ammonia levels is highly suggested. A pH of 7.0 is perfect for most tropical fish to thrive in. A pH of 6.5 is perfect for Angel and Discus fish to thrive in. A pH of 7.5 is perfect for Goldfish and brackish fish to thrive in. A pH of 8.0 to 8.4 is fine for saltwater fish to thrive in. One inch of fish per one gallon of water is the norm for a freshwater aquarium. One inch of fish per five gallons of water is the norm for a saltwater aquarium.
