Native to Asia: Thailand to southern Viet Nam and Malaysia. Known as the Snakeskin Gourami or Sepat Siam. Not a showy fish but hardy, tame, and the most easily bred member of the family. Cultured both for food and for export as aquarium fish. Spawns are very large. Neither the male or female eat the young and the male does not attack the female during the mating time. Not known to be cannibalistic with any specie which makes it popular among hobbyists. Generally feeds on aquatic plants. Can breathe air directly, as well as absorb oxygen from water through its gills. In the male the dorsal fins are longer. Length, 8-10 inches.
