Native to Central America: Ciudad Veracruz, Mexico to northern Belize. Known as Moonfish, Platy. The Xiphophorus maculatus (platy) is a great addition to any tank, especially the novices tank. In this group you will find the swordtails and the platies. Platies like hard water and do well in a new setup. They love eating algae and the company of plants make them feel right at home. Given a good flake food at regular intervals supplemented with live or frozen foods help them to become strong healthy fish. Several color varieties are popular aquarium fishes, where they attain sexual maturity after 3-4 months and reproduce easily. Length, male, 1 1/2 inches, female, 2 inches.
