Native to Central America: endemic to Mexico from southern Tamaulipas to northern Veracruz. Known as Variatus. A hardy species that can handle temperatures as low as 50 fegrees for a short time. It is a prolific live-bearer, and if well fed with live Daphia the parents are not likely to eat the young. Feeds on worms, crustaceans, insects and plant matter. Length, 2 inches.
