Find this lizard from Washington to Baja California; occurs in most non-desert
habitats, including cismontane shrublands, grasslands, oak woodland, lower
montane forest; prefers areas with access to shade, water.
A short legged, heavy bodied lizard with a large triangular
head; S/V length to 7 in.; tail prehensile, very long when intact; longitudinal
skin folds on sides which enclose granular scales; dorsal and ventral scales
squarish; back brown to reddish, checkered with black and white. Egg-laying
(northern alligator lizard gives live birth).
