Pembroke Welsh Corgis

Welsh Corgi Pembroke

Dog of Kings and Queens! Queen Elizabeth of England, that is. Buckingham Palace is blessed with the presence of several running around. Pembroke Welsh Corgi's are the smallest of the herding breeds. Considered a "dwarf breed". They can herd cattle as well as ducks.

The darlings have a foxy, smiling face with happy eyes and gleeful outlook on life. Ears are erect, little or no tail, long body, short legs. Has an under and an over coat. Acceptable coat colors are red, sable, fawn, and tri-color. White collars, white on legs, underside and limited places on the head are acceptable. Weight should be maintained 27-30 pounds for a male and 25-28 for a female.

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is hard to trace back in breed history. Amusing legends and theories surround the dogs past, possibly dating back to the 9th century.

The Pembroke is known to be a very "people" orientated dog. Very energetic, intelligent, kind, never vicious, protective, loves attention and likes to clown around. She loves walks in the woods, and cuddling in a chair. Makes a great companion who needs to be a part of the family, and not kept in a crate or pen for long periods of times. A very "talkative" dog, liking to bark. A good watch dog.

She does well in obedience training as well as tracking and agility. She's not always good in repetitive training, but is food motivated. Also used as a hearing dog and/or a therapy dog.

Grooming needs are minimal. Regular brushing keeps the coat looking good, removes stray hair, eliminates dirt particles, and she sheds her coat only twice a year (spring and fall). Clip her nails every week to keep feet from splaying, trim hair on her pads often, and keep ears clean of wax and wax build-up.

Her life span is 11-13 years. She's a healthy breed, but does have some inherited tendencies. Your vet or breeder can tell you about these. An excellent pet to have inside the home. Will entertain you and love you dearly.
