TRIBUTE TO A DOG

by Senator George Vest, 1870

The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog. A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer; he will mlick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wing and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens. Wanted to pass this along, it says it best. We have a dog  named "Jeremiah" & a cockatoo name "Tucson" . Debi & John

Mickie and Minnie are my two cocker spaniels. They give me unconditional love. Always apologetic and forgiving of their humans. Minnie always seems to know when I need alittle TLC myself! Mickie is geriatric now. She has lost a lot of her vision and has constant ear infections, which have affected her hearing. Her bladder control is weakening too. If she was a human she would most likely be living in a nursing home or at least have nurses to care for her.

She hears us talk about maybe it is time....but the next day she is like a little puppy again! Just letting us know that she isn't ready...Thank God for pets!

This is more along the lines of what it means to have a pet. Not to master, but to serve: You should take on the responsibility of keeping an animal, not with the idea of *mastering* another living being, but with the idea of *serving* another living being.

My dog Kirby is more my child than my dog. When I first got him he was quite a handful and more than one person told me to give him away. But whenever someone asked me WHY I didn't, I would always reply that had he been a real child and not what I may have dreamed of, would I just give that child away? NO! I accept him for who he is, playful, mischievious, downright "bad", but when he's good he's my little angel. I love him so much perhaps because he has SUCH personality, and I chose this responsibility and I would NEVER give him up. I never give up on something or someone I love. Dogs don't usually get to choose who they end up with yet they give us their undying affection and love. They guarantee us the security that someone will be there depending on us, making us feel important and needed. They really are our best friends. On a lighter note, my husband thinks I love my dog more than him...He may be right!!!

I love animals. They are our best friends. A pet is a friend and our duty is to give them all what they need specially love. I live with 1 dog,4 Iguanas,8 Tortoises,1 scarlet maccaw,1 parrakeet,2 toucans,1 fish. I'm very happy with them.

To me a pet is a dear friend, someone we can sit quietly with, or play games with, or talk to.we have a dog, two cats, three iguanas and a python. and all of them love to be loved on. also they are all spoiled, as i think they should be.

My husband was raised without the benefit of living with animals and it has taken a few years for our four legged children to train him to be a good 'pet'. They have taken him for walks, taught him to sit quietly while they lay in his lap, to be quick with a stroking hand when they come up to him and they have even been able to teach him to clean feet and groom. Between the dogs, mostly Great Danes, cats and horses he has become very well educated and would get the blue ribbon if they chose to show him, but they are more interested in a family pet. He has learned to appreciate the joy that each has given to him. When we first got married, 23 years ago, he really didn't have any idea what he was getting into marrying an animal lover that needs to have several pets, in the house, all the time. When we then moved to a farm and added horses, peacocks and several others he just gave up and decided to enjoy the four legged members of our family. Now he would not be happy without at least a couple of four legged children.

Hello, to me a pet is that special little creature that God put on this earth to tend to for as long as ye both shall live.Tend to give them the attention they want when they want it and also when you need it ,to feed them, keep them in good health, but it is the love you feel. for me mine are furry people smiles

When we got married five years ago my husband and I started out with a cat each . We now have eight cats and a Dalmatian all were adopted except one cat which I got from a litter of free kittens. The pleasure we receive from these animals out weigh the cat hair everywhere. Each have there own crazy personality. One cat swings from the curtain rod in the kitchen another drinks his water with his paw. Some like to talk all the time but each and everyone of  our animals will comfort me or my husband when we feel down. They make us laugh and yes sometimes angry. To my husband and I they are our children. God Bless anyone who adopts a pet.

Some animal lovers think the term "pet" is demeaning and insist on the usage "companion animal".  But they are missing the point, I think.  A pet is any creature of a different species than ourselves whom we cherish, protect and admire.  SOME pets are actual companions, like cats and dogs, but other pets -- like spiders and praying mantises, who make great pets -- don't share much of their human's life experience and therefore can't be called companions.  But they give their human a wonderful opportunity to experience the beauty of a totally different creature's life, and to love and respect that total differentness in a way that makes US more human.  I personally am a conventional cat person, but my reptile and insect-loving friends have enlightened me.

Yours -- Marion

A pet is a friend of a different species. We may have to be their alphas, their caretakers, their mommies and daddies, but we eventually become loving, loyal friends.Louise TaylorSan Antonio, TX

My dog is everything I wish I could be.......patient, forgiving, full of love, hope and gratitude. He is my sole. I always say that dogs are just big hearts covered in fur, with a nose on one end and a tail on the other.

A pet is a friend who greets you after a bad day and makes you feel better, a pet is someone to warm your feet or your lap on a cold winter's night,a pet gives you all its love and devotion no matter what and tickles your funnybone with it's antics. These are just a few things of many that pet lovers feel for their pets. Thank you, Naomi Frantz

A pet is something to keep you warm at night, to keep you safe and to brighten up your life. My dog is my shadow, wherever I go she goes. She is not only my dog but my bestfriend. I don't know what I would do with out her. Although sometimes she can be a pain like when she wakes me up at two AM for a bathroom break I will always still love her. A pet givesyou all the love that you could possibly want.

A cat allows my husband and I to share her household. Almost nine years ago, I wanted a pet: we bought a Siamese. She owns us! Our cat is a bundle of fur and love, sent to us by God Above. She warms our laps and warms our hearts, we could not live if she were not. God gave us animals to remind us of our imperfections; a cat or a dog loves unconditionally. No matter what kind of mood I'm in, or if I'm having a bad hair day or just a bad day, my Chiquitita loves me. I could go on all day about the qualities of our Siamese....the cat with the attitude!

Daily, I thank God for animals......for the gift of a four-legged fur-ball.

A pet is someone who relies on you for unconditional love. Someone who is always glad to see you and is quick to forgive. A pet knows when you are not feeling well and tries to comfort you. When you have watched the birth of your pet and, after 16 years, witnessed the passing of your pet, you know without any doubt that you have lost a family member.

P.S.

What is a pet?

Pets are a bundel of love. Their soft and cudly,so sweet, always kind. Never weary of hearing of your problems.Never tire of your socioty. They never scold you for your faults. Always willing to lend an extra ear. Pets are perfect, and though we may often get angry for some trifling fault. They would never purpously hurt your feelings, And so, in my heart, pets are our perfect friends..... and I love them.

I've got 3 dogs and 2 cats and wouldn't know what to do without any of them. They are always there no matter what. I can come home from a long day and be greeted at the door with 3 wagging tails and 3 tongues trying to all kiss me at the same time. Then when you do get sat down I've got 2 cats in my lap. There is nothing better than having a friend to come home to that you know is only glad to see you and doesn't care if your going to make supper on time or if they can have some money. My animals are the best things that I have and wouldn't trade them for the world though they are awful spoiled.

A pet is a companion that will never want to be away from you. Their a nice treat to come home to . They always have time for you. Will never choose another ones side. They'll kiss you no matter if you brushed your teeth or not. Will always greet you with loving eyes, alot of pet talk and most of all their loving heart. Pets are friends. They listen to you when you want to talk, if you want to cry they"ll come and give you a pet like comfort. A pet is a truly special gift that not everyone has the joys of having. Me on the other hand I have 5 dogs who's names are Girly (female, chow mix), Oli (female, chinese shar-pei), Little Lady(female fox terrier), Kuuipo (female, german short-haired pointer), and Kujo(male, saint bernard). I also have a female cat her name is Angel and last but not least I have 2 chickens Sweetie and Honey. And each day I wake up I look forward to seeing the treat that lies ahead for me when I prepare breakfast for all of them. We all talk in the morning they make their little nnoises and I let them Know that I appreciate them and love them dearly. With my husband leaving for work it's just me and them and let me tell you there is never a dull moment. And I would never trade them for the world.......That my friend is a pet...You'd understand more if you spent the day with me and my loving family. They truly are my bestfriends..... mahalo Marie Malavenda

Pets are truly courteous folk; they do not drink, they do not smoke,

they do not cuss or gripe or grouse or tell you how to run your house.

They never nag or give offense.

I was thinking of what to write, and one of my dogs came up and stuck his head under my arm and licked my chin. I have two dogs and two cats, and I think a pet is something that is warmth and life and quiet companionship. They "kiss" you even when your breath is less than desirable. They let you rub their tummies and scratch their heads in public. The always want to sit on your lap, and they never greet you with " oh, it's just you"--it's more like "There She IS!" They are constantly entertaining; sometimes we will just watch them play. Even the simplest things they do are funny, good for a laugh. A pet makes you feel good just by being in a room with you. Watching them sleep more than half the day makes you stop and think what a life they have...eat, sleep, play, snuggle--isn't that what we all want?

Our 4 children (2 on their own and 2 in college) aren't around much so the dogs are great company. Always happy to see us when we get home from work, don't complain much. Great companions. They keep me up when I am down. Just can't say enough about having pets.
