West Highland White Terriers Dog Breed

West Highlands

West Highland Terrier

It is most likely that the West Highland White Terrier and , in fact, all the terriers of Scotland came from the same roots. The West Highland White Terrier originated in Scotland and was known to be in existence at least l00 years before they were seen in dog shows.

He is spunky,  needing daily exercise, full of determination and highly devoted. They are a great outdoor dog being good hunters, speedy and smart. Indoors they make a wonderful pet, get along well with children, always faithful and understanding. They are a hardy breed, living 12 to 15 years,  that love to play in the snow and will follow you on walks.

The Coat, the breed's hallmark, is rarely seen to perfection: a double coat, properly blending the two-inch outer coat of straight hair with the plentious, soft undercoat. Silkiness and curliness are insufferable. The show Westie requires a considerable amount of grooming. To keep the Westie looking his best combing twice a week and trimming every three months is required.
